Hatman

The Game of Kings

Then these men were bound in their mantles, their tunics, their hats, and their other garments, and they were cast into the burning fiery furnace.

Daniel, chapter 3, verse 21

For with alacrity he founded a gymnasium right under the citadel, and he induced the noblest of the young men to wear the Greek hat.

2 Maccabees, chapter 4, verse 12

Put another way, if you picture using the root account as wearing a special magic hat that gives you lots of power, so that you can, by waving your hand, destroy entire cities, it is a good idea to be a bit careful about what you do with your hands. Since it is easy to move your hand in a destructive way by accident, it is not a good idea to wear the magic hat when it is not needed, despite the wonderful feeling.

The Linux Installation and Getting Started Guide

Sorry, no screenshots are currently available.

Current version

The latest stable version of hatman is 0.5.0.1, as released, erm, sometime in March 1999, maybe about the 12th or something.

When I release a version, there will be announcements in the following places (as well as this page, of course):

Copyright and such

Requirements

and one of...

Currently in the works are DOS and windows versions of hatman... Watch this space!

Downloading hatman

Hatman can be downloaded from the official FTP site ftp://croftj.net/usr/hatsoft/hatman/. This is also where you can get the latest alpha (developer) releases. Refer to the hatman readme for help on how to compile. Some of the libraries you need to compile hatman are also available at this address.

If you know of any mirrors you would like adding to the list, or want to keep hatman on your own site, tell us, at hatman@pharaoh0.demon.co.uk.

Contacting the authors

There is a hatman mailing list. This is where you can send all of your complaints / querys / bug reports etc... It's hatman@pharaoh0.demon.co.uk. You can subscribe to the mailing list by sending a message containing

  subscribe hatman
in the message body to majordomo@pharaoh0.demon.co.uk. Anything larger (eg tarballs) should be directed to james@pharaoh0.demon.co.uk. That doesn't mean I want anything really, really massive, by the way.

This address is not to be used for anything but short commands for majordomo, the program that manages the mailing list. To contact a person use the mailing list address (hatman@...) or the address below (james@...).

Warning: The mailing list is not really for users, only people interested in the development of the game should subscribe. If there is enough interest, I will create a seperate system for notifying people of the latest version.

Wanted: developers and the likes

We now need testers, programmers, artists, level-designers, and all-sorts of others to help with the development of hatman. If you feel you have something to contribute mail us, or even better, join the mailing list. Aw, go on.

Hatman T-shirts now available!

Yes, that's right. Get your very own hatman t-shirt! Currently we are offering a plain white fruit-of-the-loom t-shirt with a nice print of the hatman hat on the front. These actually look really great. We have decided on a launch price of 20UKP. Remember, the moeny is not supposed to be for the t-shirt - it is to support the development of hatman. Postage and packaging is included. E-mail james@pharaoh0.demon.co.uk for more information.
